Text for Listening
Speaker 1:
I’m always doing something; I play loads of sport, coach a junior football team and go running every morning. I love being so active, but I find that once in a while I just need to stop and take some time to relax and unwind. And for me, the perfect way to do this is to grab a bite to eat, put my feet up and watch my favourite program on TV. Even if it’s only for an hour. I just need long enough to re-charge my batteries and then I’m ready to go again!
Speaker 2:
My parents have always thought that TV is a waste of time, but they’re starting to wonder now as I’m always telling them about the different things I’ve found out from it. I love watching documentaries about science and nature and different countries and their cultures. And I find watching TV much more interesting than doing research on the Internet because it’s more relaxing and you get to see what things look and sound like.
Speaker 3:
I like watching TV sometimes, but I find a lot of programs far too violent. So many of the popular films and drama series shown are full of people fighting or using guns or other weapons; it really upsets me. I’m sure this must encourage some people to behave like this in real life, especially if they watch a lot of TV. And that’s another problem – I think young people are spending far too long watching TV each day when they could be out playing sport or having fun with their friends.
Speaker 4:
I love to watch a little TV after I’ve finished all my homework in the evening. Usually, I watch soap operas or a comedy or chat show –something light so that I don’t have to think. Occasionally, I watch a documentary or thenews because my parents want to, but I think watching TV should be for fun. There’s nothing I like better than to sit down and watch a funny comedy with my family when we’ve finished all our work for the day.
Speaker 5:
I can’t always afford to go to the cinema, so I watch a lot of films on TV. What I really don’t like, though, are all the adverts! Usually, I’m just starting to enjoy a film and then there’s a ten-minute break. It’s really irritating. I know they have to have adverts but sometimes they go on for so long that I forget what I was watching and start to lose interest.
Speaker 6:
Just like most other people, I do enjoy watching TV because I find it entertaining and relaxing, but sometimes I feel I spend too much time watching it. Last night, for example, I sat down to watch a comedy I like, then afterwards I changed channel sand something else caught my attention. Anyway, before I knew it, a whole evening had passed and it was time for bed. I could have been doing something a lot more useful, like playing sport or just spending time with my family.

Text for Reading
“TV or not TV”
Television plays a very important role in people’s lives. It’s a wonderful source of information and one of the best ways to spend free time. Television viewing is the most popular leisure pastime. It’s not surprising, because TV channels show a great variety of programs: documentaries and current affairs, feature films and comedies, soaps and police series, concerts and talk shows.
Television is a reflection of the modern world. It gives you an opportunity to travel all over the world, to see different people and to learn about their customs and traditions.
Television keeps you informed about the rest of the world. It also helps to escape from our everyday problems. A lot of people usually relax watching soaps. Their story lines are entertaining, but often unbelievable. I don’t think that they show life realistically. But to many people, the characters in the TV serial have become more important than real people.
Of course, not everything shown on TV is made in good taste. There are badly-written programs that contain unnecessary bad language and violence. Another thing I would like to complain about is the amount of smoking in the films that are shown on TV. Smoking is often shown as a very “cool” thing to do, making young people take up smoking themselves.
Many people admit that the quality of television could be better. One reason for the poor quality of programs is advertising. Not all people like watching commercials. They find ads silly and boring. But I am not against commercials on TV, because television companies get most of their money from advertising.
Some people say that television is a terrible waste of time. Of course, there are TV addicts who can’t drag themselves away from the box. But if we watch TV for an hour a day, to find out what is happening in the world or to relax, then television is really useful. So I think we should not blame the TV for the bad effects it has. We must know how to make the best use of it.
